Jonathan the Tortoise – World’s Oldest Living Land Animal
Jonathan is a Seychelles giant tortoise living on Saint Helena. Born around 1832, he is officially the oldest known living land animal at over 192 years old.
He arrived on the island in 1882 from Seychelles as a gift, already about 50 years old. Since then, he has lived at Plantation House, witnessing major moments in history.
Today, Jonathan is nearly blind and cannot smell, but he still recognizes his vet’s voice and enjoys being hand-fed. Even at his age, he remains active and can still be seen walking around the grounds on good days.
