Sergeant Stubby, a canine, held the unofficial role of mascot for the 102nd Infantry Regiment and was enlisted in the 26th (Yankee) Division during World War I. Throughout his 18-month tenure, he actively participated in 17 battles and four offensives on the Western Front.
Stubby's remarkable feats include thwarting surprise mustard gas assaults, locating and providing solace to the injured. His remarkable deeds garnered significant attention in contemporary American newspapers. Stubby is hailed as the most decorated war dog of the Great War and notably the sole dog to earn a promotion to sergeant through combat.
